La Vielle Ferme
This Old Farm...a little primer about our home. The oldest part of the home was built around 1840 by Alfred Putney. Alfred came from Lowell, MA and sold print type. A journal dated 1849 dropped out of the ceiling when we were gutting the structure. It described the travels of Mr. Putney as he took printer's type-face far and wide, travelling by coach and train to places as far away as Mobile, Alabama and Plymouth, Indiana, incredible! Mr. Putnay married Anne Hobart, who had Hebron roots (thus Hobart Hill, of which we live on). At the time, two main roads traversed nearby, the Province Road, linking Portsmouth to Haverhill, NH, and the College Road, linking Durham to Hanover. Evidence of the property as a working farm abounds. It's interesting that most farms at that time were up in the hills, were the roads were. It was easier to build roads above the streams versus building bridges over the low-lands. Hebron remained a small town over the next 150 years, and still has it's small-town charm. We consider ourselves very fortunate to steward an historic property with lots of hidden stories. We look forward to adding to its rich lore and to sharing our home with family and friends.
